Coop Home Goods Original Memory Foam Pillow Review

The Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow

Among the Top-Rated

On Amazon, the online marketplace, the Premium Adjustable Loft Shredded Memory Foam Pillow by Coop Home Goods (CHG) has the 4th highest rating (4.36 out of 5 stars, or 87%, with over 14k reviews – 13.9k verified customers) of pillows with over 1,000 customer reviews. This far outpaces the heavily advertised My Pillow (3.5 stars, 70%).

Obviously, there is something about this pillow that rings the bell with so many people. Two features, shared by three other memory foam pillows among the top seven, are the filling of shredded memory foam, and the cover containing rayon made from bamboo.

The CHG model name for this pillow is original. This can be confirmed by comparing the descriptions and prices on Amazon and Coop HG. It can also be seen by scrolling down on the Amazon page to the manufacturer-provided copy to see “Original” as a product banner.

Fluffy Fill and Washable Cover

Five of the top 7 pillows on Amazon have fluffy fillings. One has hollow polyester fibers (polyfiber), and the others have finely shredded memory foam (SMF). Both kinds of filling can be shaped to fit by the user by pulling the filling around in the pillow. One advantage of shredded memory foam over polyfiber is that it holds its shape longer. All of the SMF pillows and the polyfiber model state that they will not go flat.

Shredded memory foam in pillows is presented as a “down alternative” – also a tag of polyfiber. That is because of the softness. But the unquilled feathers or down do not interlock and hold the way the edges of the foam shreds do.

Coop Home Goods says, “The Original features our unique proprietary blend of foam.” This is what they call their “firmest” foam. The nature of the blend is not divulged, other than to state that the foam is certified by CertiPUR-US as free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals, and meeting standards for emissions, etc.

The loft of the CHG Original can be adjusted by unzipping the cover and the liner, taking out some of the shredded foam, and zipping it shut. According to Coop, this matches the height of the pillow to one’s sleeping position to keep the neck in line with the rest of the spine. If too much has been taken out, some can be put back in.

If the customer wants a firmer pillow, a ½-lb. package of shredded memory foam can be ordered from the company or on Amazon. This is 11% the weight of a queen-sized pillow. By comparison, Snuggle-Pedic will supply up to 50% replacement fill for free during their trial period.

Bamboo in Cover

Bamboo rayon could be called “bamboo silk” because of the silky texture of rayon. It is this silky feel that makes rayon attractive as a cover fiber for pillows. Being made from bamboo means less stress on forests, making it environmentally attractive. It is no surprise that this cover material is on four of the five top-rated pillow brands as reported by Sleep Like the Dead.

CHG does not label its cover fabric as woven or knit, but in hand-grabs on demonstration videos, it behaves like a knit fabric. The cover is zippered so it can be removed and washed. This also facilitates adjustment of the filling.

This filling itself is in a polyester liner. This is a reminder of the ticking used to keep the filling in down and feather pillows. The shredded foam may not need the same level of containment as down, but it is there. Coop Home Goods does say that the tightly knit “Interlock Fabric” is breathable. Like the cover, the liner is zippered for access to the filling.

Shredded memory foam has two advantages in pillows over block foam:

(1) It is breathable, letting more air through than even perforated foam. This keeps the pillow cooler, as well as letting you breathe even if your face is in the pillow (still not a recommended position).
(2) Shredded foam is shapeable. Grab and pull the SMF by grabbing the cover, and pull into the best configuration for your head and neck. It will hold its shape for a long time, not collapsing during the night like down.

Other Considerations

Shredded memory foam pillows, such as the Coop Home Goods Original, are washable (in cold water), another advantage they have over block foam.

A distinct benefit of the Coop Home Goods SMF pillows, along with those by Snuggle-Pedic and Xtreme Comforts, is that they are made in the United States. Foam and foam products not made in North America or Europe have a history of problems with quality.

Availability

Coop Home Goods sells its pillows, including the Original, from its website. They are also available on Amazon and on Walmart.com.

Trial Period and Warranty

The trial period of the Coop Home Goods Original is 30 days, ⅓ the 90-day period for Snuggle-Pedic (S-P) pillows. Return is the only option stated for the CHG trial period, while S-P offers to adjust the filling by changing the firmness of the foam and/or the proportions of the blend between Biogreen and regular memory foam. Also, S-P will add to or replace up to 50% of the foam inside. The warranty is for only 5 years, ¼ Snuggle-Pedic’s 20 years.

Evaluation

The Coop Home Goods Original (Premium Adjustable Loft) Shredded Memory Foam Pillow is a good buy for those seeking to upgrade from block foam or feather/down pillows, as is already shown by the number and average rating of customer reviews. It is hypoallergenic, unlike down and feathers, and it can be washed to keep it clean and dust-free. However, its trial period is only for 30-days, and its warranty for 5 years.
